Guide dogs are living, breathing, feeling creatures, and keeping them in tip-top shape is essential to their daily work. Regular veterinary care is of the utmost importance, and most guide dog schools require annual reports on the health of the guide to monitor for possible problems down the road.

In spite of these precautions, though, guide dogs do get sick, and sometimes require extensive veterinary attention. For many handlers, the financial strain of meeting these extraordinary veterinary costs can be significant.

The Guide Dog Users of Canada Wellness Fund was established to provide assistance to Canadian guide dog handlers who face necessary, extraordinary veterinary costs to ensure that their guide dog can continue working. Costs related to a retired guide dog who is still living with his or her handler may also be considered at the discretion of the Committee.
