Only non-routine, extraordinary, and emergency veterinary expenses will be considered for reimbursement from the Wellness Fund. Everyday costs of owning a guide dog are not generally eligible for reimbursement including, but not limited to, costs relating to:
- Annual checkups and vaccinations;
- Municipal licensing fees;
- Food;
- Grooming and boarding;
- Non-essential or cosmetic veterinary or dental work; or
- Transportation charges relating to ordinary veterinary appointments (emergency travel or travel to specialists to be considered on a case by case basis).
In most instances, the Wellness Fund will not provide ongoing funding for the treatment of a chronic, recurring or long-term condition (such as the need for specialized food).
Maximum Funding Limits
Each application is considered on its own merits, but as a guideline, minor procedures (with a cost under $100), if approved, will likely be covered in their entirety. Unless special circumstances exist, the maximum amount that will be awarded from the Wellness Fund is typically 50% of the overall cost of the procedure to a maximum of $500.00.
No single applicant may receive more than $500.00 in funding from the Wellness Fund in a 12 month period without approval from Guide Dog Users of Canada’s board of directors.
